The Philippine BPO Scene

At the beginning of the new century, the Philippines has emerged as an important supplier of labor to the global offshoring market. The demand for offshore call centers has given birth to the current Business Process Outsourcing or BPO boom in the Philippines.

Last year, the country was able to collect $2.1 billion from offshore service generating revenues, placing the Philippines third behind India and China. This figure is a huge increase considering that the outsourcing industry in Manila employed just 2,400 people and the industry had revenues of merely $24 million at the beginning of the decade.

Last year, over 200,000 workers were involved in various BPO companies. Experts estimate say that in 2010 BPO in the Philippines will earn about US$11 billion and employ more than 900,000 people. These means that companies similar to AOV Philippines outsourcing will continue to flourish and more Filipinos will strive to join the outsourcing industry.

But why has the Philippines emerged as a top Business Process Outsourcing location? Well, low costs is one of the main reasons. At 13 percent of the US level, the Philippines has the second-lowest hourly wage for offshoring professionals. In comparison, the wages in Malaysia are around twice that of the Philippines. This means that a company that wants to hire an online marketer or web designer from the Philippines can save money.

Another reason is that the country has a larger pool of workers suitable for multinational companies than most Asian countries. Studies show that for every 100 college graduates with finance and economics degrees, executives of multinationals said they would hire 30 from the Philippines.

All these figures show that the Philippines will continue to become a major force in the Asian Business Process Outsourcing industry. As many young Filipinos aspire to become involved in the different areas of Business Process Outsourcing, the offshoring industry will continue to become a dominant part of the Philippine economy.
